C. Dash & B. Christensen, pers. , respectively). Certain species were considered to be synonymous for these phylogenetic analyses (Table 3). All of M arion ina diverticulata, M. magnaglandulosa, and Enchytronia minor are junior synonyms of E. parva. Lumbricillus nielseni is a junior syno- + + + + + + + + + nym of L. buelowi; and L. cervisiae and L. christenseni are junior synonyms of L. knoellnerio Further remarks on these can be found in Coates (1987a). Six species in included genera, Achaeta neotropica, A.

The higher level phylogeny for enchytraeids and propappids determined (Coates, 1987b) was limited in its consistency due especially to a general lack of information about haplotaxid species. Information on all species of that group is important because Haplotaxidae, as it was recognized in Coates (1987b), is not monophyletic and probably includes the independent sisters to Tubificidae and Enchytraeidae. Species of Enchytraeidae are not consistently well-distinguished and several synonymies and indistinguishable taxa were encountered for the small number of species (103) considered in my analyses.

The zone near high water characterized by Pontodrilus and Talitridae was also rich in enchytraeids. Relatively few individuals were taken from among roots of salt marsh plants while no enchytraeids were recovered from mud or silt without flowering plants. , pine forest, grassland and agricultural land. They were most abundant in the deep woodland humus on limestone at Marianna and Torreya, in boggy ground and in wet but not saturated soils and organic matter which bordered water bodies such as rivers, swamps and bayheads.
